i don't know how big your tank is, but they may just be feeling the stress of moving to another tank and being overcrowded, or not having enough hiding places and fish are getting territorial.

We are looking into getting some tetras for our tank, and a lot of people i've spoken to have not had much luck with tetras - i guess they can be a bit finicky.

good luck!

I used to volunteer at the New England Aquarium (located in Boston, MA), and two of our seahorses bred on their own.  Dad had a couple dozen babies before he was separated from mom to give him a break.  It was great to watch them grow from transparent little "things" to real seahorses.
If you get the chance to see baby seahorses, i highly recommend it!

3  Plants / General Plants / suggestions for groundcover plants
 on: 11/23/07 at 19:34:53
Started by jpsnickel | Post by jpsnickel
We have a 29 gallon tank set up with 5 platies, 3 pearl danios, 3 zebra danios, and 3 emerald cories.  One side of the tank is set up with some taller plants (wisteria, bamboo, amazon sword, and some unknown species) and drift wood, the other with a lava rock and some red wendth

I know it's cliche, but we were planning on getting some neon tetras in the tank for some color - we have too much silver!!  I was ready online somewhere that neons like plants to hide amongst.  We don't want to fill the tank with taller plants, and cut out swimming room for everyone else, so we were thinking of getting some shorter plants that would allow the tetras to hide.

Any suggestions???

Thanks!

4  Freshwater / General Freshwater / minor algae overgrowth with live plants!
 on: 11/23/07 at 19:29:14
Started by jpsnickel | Post by jpsnickel
We have a 5 gallon tank that has been up and running since May (platies and cories populate). We also have live plants - red wendth and wisteria.

In addition, we also have a 29 gallon tank that has been up about a month and is populated with platies, cories, pearl danios and zebra danios. Live plants include wisteria, amazon sword, bamboo, red wendth, and 3 other species (i don't know what kind).

We are starting to get an overpopulation of algae, especially in the 5 gallon tank. I know it's good to have algae for the cories, we're just afraid that it's going to get out of hand way too fast. Already the filter intake tube has it's fair share - and we're afraid of it clogging the filter system. Plus, for aesthetic reasons, don't want a green film taking over our aquarium.

The 5 gallon tank (which has a incandescent light bulb) is about 10 feet from our balconey sliding doors, and gets sunlight (but not direct beams) about 2-3 hours in the morning. The 29 gallon (fluorescent plant light) is about 18 feet from the same sliding doors, and does not get any direct light.

Since the beginning, we have been fertilizing once weekly with Kent Botanica (broad range vitamin and mineral supplement) at a dose of 2mL/20 gal.  This week, we discontinued the fertilizer to see if that does the trick.  Next week we were also planning on doing a thorough gravel vacuuming (taking out plants and fish until all the muck clears)

So my question... what methods/techniques can we use to
-keep enough in our tank for the fish (the cories also get sinking pellets)
-not kill our "good" live plants
-prevent overgrowth and wreck havoc with our established tanks!

we had two snails - one apple and another ramshorn.  they did not eat our plants to the point wher the plants were dying.  basically nibbled a little here and there on the edges.  we have wisteria and red wendth planted.

we did have a hard time keeping them alive.  the first one lived for a couple of months, the second for a couple of weeks.  One of the girls at the fish store said they can be a little finicky - especially when it comes to the addition of salt (which fish like).  She said that it is much harder to keep a 5 gallon tank than a bigger one, because it doesn't take much to throw off the balance.

Currently, we have three baby platies (which will move into our bigger tank when they get bigger) and an emerald cory and a spotted cory.  They seem to get along great with each other and the platies.   Cories seem to really like being in groups, but it seems like you may be overcrowding if you add a group of cories.

good luck!

I'm so glad to find out I'm not the only one!  We named our 3 original platies, and then 2 of their babies.  we have three more babies, but they were all born around the same time, and they all have Mickey Mouse patterns, so they are almost impossible to tell apart.  It took us awhile to get cable tv, so we used to have dinner on the floor and watch the fish.  Those platies do have personalities!
Now that we have 3 Pearl Danios, 3 Zebra Danios, and 6 cories (3 emerald/3 spotted), we have not named them, but we have also previously named our snails.

Platies:
Loxley -we had 3 wisteria planted together that she liked to hang out in, and I commented that it looked like sherwood forest.  Named after Robin of Locksley, but changed spelling to Loxley because we got Bagel the snail at the same time.  Bagel and Lox - horrible pun, but enjoyable nonetheless

Allie - short of Altuna (horrible fish pun again) after visiting Altoona, PA.  Also goes by Allie-gator and Allie the terrible because she is the aggressor in the group

Mickie - i'm sure you're all shocked to know that this is our Mickey Mouse patterned one.

Maddie - My boyfriend couldn't remember the pronounciation of Platy (always tried Plate-y), so Maddie rhymes with Platy

Caroline - One of the new babies born in our tank (Maddie was the first), and we discovered her the day after we got back from a road-trip down south.  Named after the Carolinas.

Snails:
Bagel - i have no idea how we came up with this one
Pumpernickel - brown ramshorn snail, decided to keep with the bread theme.

7  Freshwater / General Freshwater / Sad Mystery - 5 Year, Established Tank
 on: 11/15/07 at 19:21:39
Started by shaanonlindauer | Post by shaanonlindauer
I have a 55 gal tank that's been great for 5 years. Last weekend, my angel started acting lethargic.  I tested the water and the ammonia was spiking.  I did a 50% water change and vaccumed the gravel.  I also added Ammonia Lock because I feared losing my angel fish.  That was Friday.  Sunday morning nearly all my fish were dead!  I lost 9 fish I've had for 5 years.  Very sad.

So, I immediately put the remaining living fish in a hospital tank and did a 90% water change using bottle spring water.  I added slime coat and when the temp was good, added back the fish.   The next day, the ammonia was testing at about 1.0 still.  I was afraid of losing more fish, so I put Ammonia Block in again.  That was 3 days ago and now the ammonia tests at 7.5!!!!!!  Plus, when I got home from work tonight, the tank was super cloudy like I've never seen.   The weird part is the fish are fine.  They ate and look healthy.

Any help is appreciated!!!

8  Freshwater / General Freshwater / filter help needed

I'm upgrading from a 15 gal to a 90 gal tank and I'm a little overwhelmed. I got the tank and random items on craigslist and need some advice regarding the filtration. I have a Marineland Magnum 350 canister and it came with carbon already in it and I'm #uming it's been used. I've read about different medias and need to know the best way to get this tank started. Do I start it up the way it is or do I get a new foam sleeve or replace the carbon? Any suggestions? I'm really lost and afraid I'm going to make mistakes right off the bat. Thanks

9  Freshwater / General Freshwater / New fish tank

Hi! I'm new to owning a fish tank and have a question. We started off last week with three fish, a black molly, a yellow molly and a female guppy. They were all getting along great! Today we introduced some new fish, five neon tetras, a clown louch(I think that's the name but not sure, it's a bottom feeder) and a crab. They were fine when we first put them in there but since then the clown louch has attacked two of the tetras and eaten off their fins! The weird thing is these fish came from the same tank at the store. Should I be concerned? The guy who sold us the fish didn't mention anything and he has been a great help so far. Is it just normal? The tetras don't seem to be dead either but they can't really swim either. Should I take them out of the tank? Thanks for the help!
